About
Jazz Samurai is Phil Smy, a Canadian guitarist and singer who spent decades playing professionally and now lives in rural Miyagi. He plays solo: one voice, a hollow-body or baritone electric guitar, and a songbook of more than 200 songs.
That songbook is the show. The Beatles, Billy Joel, Paul Simon and the Eagles sit next to The Blue Hearts, Miyuki Nakajima and Sayuri Ishikawa’s enka. KISS might be followed by Autumn Leaves. There’s Canadian rock most audiences in Japan have never heard, from The Guess Who to Trooper, and a handful of Phil’s own songs too.
Every song is rebuilt for one guitar and one voice, sung in English or Japanese with respect, humour and a willingness to take risks. It works best up close: small clubs, bars, cafés and community events where the audience becomes part of the evening.

ジャズサムライは、宮城の田舎に暮らすカナダ人ギタリスト／シンガー、フィル・スマイ。長年プロのギタリストとして活動し、現在はホロウボディやバリトンのエレキギター一本と歌声で、200曲を超えるレパートリーを届けています。
ビートルズ、ビリー・ジョエル、ポール・サイモン、イーグルスと並んで、ザ・ブルーハーツの「リンダリンダ」、中島みゆきの「糸」、石川さゆりの「津軽海峡・冬景色」まで。KISSの次に「枯葉」が始まることも。日本ではあまり知られていないカナダのロックや、自作のオリジナル曲も歌います。
英語でも日本語でも、どの曲もギター一本と声のために組み立て直し、敬意とユーモアと遊び心をもって演奏。客席との距離が近い小さなクラブ、バー、カフェ、地域のイベントにぴったりのライブです。
